More Art Deco from our visit to Dumfries in May 2018
This is on Whitesands, over the road from the river Nith. Now a Carers Centre. Surprisingly the windows haven’t been too mucked about with:-

A former garage, again on Whitesands, close to the River Nith. Now multiple shops:-

This Deco house on has had its eyes poked out:-

It lies on New Abbey Road, just at its junction with Pleasance Avenue.

Gable end:-

Its gate posts:-

This neighbouring Art Deco house, almost a mirror image of the previous, is in Pleasance Avenue:-

In May last year we passed through Dumfries in a different direction from before and I spotted that Dumfries Academy building is Art Deco.
From left:-

It reminds me a bit of the old school building in Moffat, but that’s smaller.
Gable end:-

Frontage. Stitch of two photos:-

Centre portion:-

Detail. note roofline and clock face:-

Last year we visited Dalbeattie in Dumfries and Galloway.
I was surprised when we got there to find the buildings are mostly made of granite but it turned out there was a granite quarry very close by so naturally the locals made full use of it back in the day.
In fact the B&B we stayed in – the best such we have ever been in – was right beside the now disused quarry.

I also wasn’t expecting Art Deco, but it’s there.
T H Carson Butcher. It’s really only the stepped roof-line here:-

Then there was the Co-op. Full deco style:-

Roof-line detail.

More likely 1960s?:-

Former bank. Possible deco style round the doors:-

Garage/car sale room. Stepped roof-line, but windows’ “eyes” poked out:-

Former Picture House, Dalbeattie, now Bryan Gowan’s Furniture Store. Horizontals, verticals, stepped roof-line. Rule of three above window over the doors. Shame about the replaced windows.

Photographs of the cinema as it appeared in 1985 are here on the Scottish Cinemas website. It still had the original windows, then. Much more appropriate looking.

I had a recent comment on my post no 4 in this category to the effect that Tullos Primary School in Aberdeen is Art Deco.
It is.
A previous commenter, Kenfitlike, provided a link to this Sports Pavilion in Aberdeen:-

I was up at Montrose again last summer and wandered the town centre a bit further coming across these three buildings. The middle block here may be 1950s but the left one has the Art Deco style:-

That left-hand one has Critall style upper windows, still. The marble effect round the shop windows with the geometric line design also has the look:-

This is entrance to the Ladbroke’s I pictured in my first Montrose Art Deco post. Lovely Art Deco detailing here:-

Here is a wonderful Art Deco poster for the Empire Exhibition, Scotland, 1938, held in Bellahouston Park, Glasgow. I saw the poster for sale at Ingliston Antiques Fair in Edinburgh:-

There, too, was this brilliant Art Deco style chocolate box lid showing one of the two Scottish Pavilions at the Empire Exhibition, Scotland, 1938:-

Also at the same Ingliston Antiques Fair I saw this framed photo of an Art Deco building which looks as if it may have been (still be?) a hotel. The flag standard is flying a French tricolour.

Drymen (pronounced ‘drimmin’) is a village in Stirlingshire, Scotland.
Main road through the village.
The village is now bypassed so there’s not too much traffic but you have to go through it to access the road to the east side of Loch Lomond and the foot of Ben Lomond.
Shop and War Memorial. The War Memorial is behind the road signs.
Drymen War Memorial. From southeast. A simple cross above a column on a rectangular base. Great War names:-
Drymen War Memorial. Dedication reads, “The Great War 1914-1918. On this Memorial are inscribed the names of the men of this parish who at the call of King and country left all taht was dear to them endured hardship faced danger and finally passed out of the sight of men by the path of duty and self-sacrifice giving up their own lives that others might live in freedom. Let those who come after see to it that their names be not forgotten.”
From north. Dedication and WW2 panel to left. Nearest panel contains Great War names:-
Art Decoish Extension, Drymen. Thirties style at any rate. Banded contrasting painting, flat roof.

This lies opposite Gayfield football ground.

Entranceway. The balcony and canopy above the door, the windows in and beside the door, plus the rounded corner to the left – and the flat roof – are deco features. The glazing has been mucked about with though:-

Showing rounded corner, balconies, strong horizontals and verticals:-

I saw these in an antiques centre last year and had to photograph them.

There are more photos of the Albion Hotel on Flickr.
Bakelite model of Tower of Empire at the Empire Exhibition, Glasgow, 1938. The lower card insert says, “Balcony holds 600 people. Height 470 feet above sea level. Overlooking six counties.”
