Scotland’s Art Deco Heritage 55: Dingwall

Dingwall is in the Highland region, and was formerly the county town of Ross and Cromarty.

None of these is major deco but they have at least a bit of the look.

This bank is possibly 1950s, though:-

This one’s more like it. Rule of three in centre and side windows, three end windows, the glazing itself:-

A sturdier looking building:-

Art Deco Butcher’s Shop, Markinch

This is kind of hidden away in Commercial Street, Markinch. If you drive straight through the town from either of its entrances you won’t see it as it’s on a street that goes between those two main roads.

J Hastie. Scottish Craft Butcher. Rule of three in upper windows, curved shop windows. It is still a functioning butcher’s:-

Markinch Primary School

Markinch is the town nearest to Son of the Rock Acres. It’s a bit bigger than a village. Big enough to have a reasonably large Primary School which has some Art Deco styling.

I suspect, though, it was built in the 1950s when there was still a hangover of Deco style from pre Second World War days.

I took care to photograph it in summer when there were no children around.

Shop in Beauly, Hint of Art Deco

Very minor deco this, but it has a flat roof and rule of three in the windows/doors – and then there are the roof edges.

Beauly is in the county of Inverness, about ten miles west of Inverness itself.

I must admit I hadn’t expected to see even a hint of deco but here it is:-

Scotland’s Art Deco Heritage 6 (iii). Carron Restaurant Stonehaven Revisited Again

I have featured the Carron Restuarant, Stoneheaven twice before, here and here. At the time these photos were taken the restaurant was shu but it seems it has now reopened, purveying Indian food, trading under the name Carron to Mumbai.

This photo is of the side window on the alley at the left hand side of the imposing frontage of the Restaurant Window, Carron Restaurant, Stonehaven

The canopy of that imposing entrance facing Cameron Street has this side window on to the alley but through it you can see the Art Deco glazing on the canopy itself:-

As I recall this Art Deco mosaic vestibule floor was at the rear entrance to the Carron Restaurant, in Evan Street.

Edinburgh’s Art Deco Heritage 8: George Street (ii)

Funny I hadn’t really noticed this one before.

On corner of George Street and North Castle Street, Edinburgh.

Former Royal Bank of Scotland premises. Good detailing round the door:-

Inverness Art Deco (iii)

While up in Inverness last year I spotted this Art Deco house, complete with Critall windows, blue banding and flat roof:-

Its gates also had the quintessentially deco sunburst motif:-

Not far away was this moderne style house, possibly 1930s, more likely a bit later. The windows are certainly later but will be replacements. Strong horizontals and verticals though. And note canopy – all implying deco:-

Another view. Strong horizontals and verticals. Flat roof. Corner windows:-

Also its chimney is typically deco:-

Former Regal Cinema, Oxford

The good lady heard about this cinema as she was listening to the radio one day and mentioned it to me later.

The cinema is on the corner of Cowley Road and Magdalen Road but I have not seen it myself as we did not get to that part of Oxford when we were there (in 2012.)

The photo below is taken from geograph.org.

Former Regal Cinema

I found other photos of this cinema here, here and here.

It seems to be an entertainment venue now.

Art Deco in Copenhagen

Undoubtedly Art Deco, this is a restaurant called The Standard, on Havnegade, Copenhagen.

Definite deco lines plus rounded gables, not to mention the tower clock:-

Deco? There’s rule of three in the smaller windows certainly:-

As in the Netherlands there was a profusion of bikes. The photo also shows another picturesque lamp standard:-
