Cranstoun War Memorial

Acording to the Scottish War Memorials Project this is the War Memorial for Cranstoun and Pathhead.

It lies apparently in the middle of nowhere at the junction of the A 68 and A 6093 just north of Pathhead, East Lothian.

The front bears the First World War names. On the sides are the names for WW2.

This side – unusually for a War Memorial – bears the name of a woman, Lucy Walker.

I have been trying to find out the story of Lucy Walker. I pass this memorial most days and I have always wondered about her. There is another ‘Walker’ on the same memorial and I wonder if they were related. Does anyone know anything about Lucy Walker?

    Hi Barbara,
Thanks for looking in and commenting.
It seems not much is known about Lucy Walker. The Scottish War Memorials website has a section on the Cranstoun War Memorial (http://warmemscot.s4.bizhat.com/warmemscot-ftopic1638.html) where someone suggests Lucy may have been Margaret W White of the ATS, who died in February 1945. Margaret is buried in Morningside Cemetery.

    Murray,
Thanks for this. Fascinating background. It’s always good to hear the stories of the people behind the names on these memorials.

I live in Humbie, just south of Pathhead, and have wondered for years who Lucy Walker was. The link above to the Midlothian Advertiser doesn’t work, however. Can you remember the story it told ?
