Glamis Castle Rooms

This is apparently the room the Queen Mother used when she visited her childhood home at Glamis Castle as a young married woman. It is kept as it was in those days:-

Culross Abbey and Church

I forgot to say in my previous post on the village that Culross is pronounced Coo-russ.

If you climb the hilly street you will reach the ruins of Culross Abbey.

There is a more modern church built more or less on the same site but you can still wander around the ruins of the original Abbey.

Auckland Castle (ii)

I posted photos of the exterior of Auckland Castle/Palace and of its chapel here.

Proceeding from the chapel into the Palace proper you come into the impressive Bishop’s Throne Room:-

Auckland Castle (i)

Auckland Castle (also known as Auckland Palace) in the town of Bishop Auckland, County Durham, is the former palace of the Prince Bishops of Durham.

It houses a collection of paintings known as the Zurbaráns, which are definitely worth seeing.

The exterior of the Castle/Palace wasn’t at its best when we visited as there was some refurbishment work going on at the side of the Castle nearer the town. That was swathed in plastic. (Our usual luck then.)

War Memorials and Grave, Wooler Church

On the way back up from Peterborough we stopped at Wooler in Northumberland (Northumbria as was.) It’s one of our favourite places.

It being 2018 the local church was hosting an exhibition on the aniversary of the Great War’s end, featuring photographs and information about local lads who had served.

The church itself contained two War Memorials – one was a Roll of Honour for Wooler Church School, inscribed at top, “Dulce et decorum est pro patria mori.”

The other was dedicated to members of the congregation. There were two name boards, the first inscribed, “To the glory of God and in memory of the men of …” The inscription carries on to the next board.

Wooler Church War Memorial

Inscription carried on from previous board, “… the Parish of Wooler who gave their lives in the Great War AD, 1914-19.”
Next board says, “In memory of those who fell in the Second World War 1939-45.”
