Stanley War Memorial is a figure of a Highland soldier standing on a square granite base. It lies in a memorial garden immediately north of St Columba’s Episcopal Church.

Dedications. Upper panel: “1914 Stanley 1919” above “To the glory of god and in memory of our beloved dead,” then “The call to arms was their death knell/For the dear homeland they fought and fell/This sacred shrine stands here to tell. Lest we forget”
Lower panel “Second World War 1939-1945,” followed by World War 2 names.

Great War Names:-

Bishopshire War Memorial is a stone column with inscribed Celtic cross situated in front of Bishopshire Golf Club’s clubhouse off the A 911 road between Scotlandwell and Kinnesswood in the former Kinross-shire part of Perth and Kinross. (I have no idea why the golf club is called Bishopshire except that it must be a local name. In my youth I used to play league badminton against Bishopshire Badminton Club who played out of a church hall in Scotlandwell.)

Dedications. “To the memory of the lads from this parish who fell in the Great War 1914-1918.” Lower dedication, “Also those who fell in 2nd World War.” At bottom, “Their name liveth forevermore”:-

The Talbot Rice Gallery (see posts here and here) is housed in part of the Old College, Edinburgh.

Spennymoor is a town in County Durham. We usually bypassed it on travelling to and from Barnard Castle but last December we decided to have a look at it on our way back from visiting Bowes Museum. Unfortunately the light was fading a bit by the time we did.

Earlier this month we took in the Barbara Hepworth Exhibition at the Scottish National Gallery of Modern Art, Modern Two, Edinburgh.

The Exhibition is entitled Barbara Hepworth, Art and Life and is open till 2/10/2022.

As well as sculpture, for which Hepworth is most famous, there are some of her paintings on display. In the first room this one reminded me of Mondrian:-

The War Memorial at Bankfoot in Perth and Kinross is of the cairn type. It sits on a small hill towards the north of the village. The plaque describes it as Auchtergaven Parish and District:-

Shandon is a village on the shores of the Gare Loch in Argyll and Bute (the part which used to be in West Dunbartonshire.) Garelochhead lies at the head of the Gare Loch.

Shandon’s War Memorial lies beside the A 814 between Rhu and Garelochhead and takes the form of a sandstone Celtic Cross. The inscription on the pillar reads, “And the leaves of thee were for the sealing of the nations.”

Great War dedication. “To the glory of God and in grateful memory of (names) who died on active service and of thirty-six men from the district who took part in the Great War 1914-1919 and returned in safety.” Below is inscribed, “Give thanks o heart for the high souls that point us to the deathless goals.”

World War 2 dedication. “To the glory of God and in remembrance of the young men of Shandon who gave their lives in the Second World War 1939 – 1945.” Below reads, “The people blessed all the men that willingly offered themselves.”
