Our last stp in the Netherlands last year was at the Hook of Holland Stena Line Ferry Terminal,
Fortunately the queue for boarding had me stopped right at the facade of the old terminal building which I had before only managed to photograph obliquely or from a distance.

Industrial building near River Rhine. Could be 1950s or 1960s but the tower and porthole windows are deco features:-

More modern Deco styling:-

In city centre. Note balconies:-

Detail from top balcony above. Nice gate, but it seems to access only a drop:-

Horizontals, verticals and curves on Zara’s premises:-

Stadstheater. Grand Art Deco style:-

John Frostbrug in Dutch, this is the famous bridge too far, except it’s a replacement for the original Rhine Bridge fought over in the Second World War during Operation Market Garden. It’s somewhere in The Netherlands I’ve always wanted to visit.

I must say the River Rhine looks not very wide here – not as wide as the Clyde at Dumbarton certainly. Still an obstacle to an army though:-

Eastern guard post. Slight Deco styling. I assume this is original:-

Western guard post. Note groove up the middle of steps, for wheeling bicycles up and down.:-

Reverse view of bridge:-

Roadway:-

Commemorative plaque with inscription to John Frost by roadway on north side of bridge:-

This was the most Deco building I saw in Amsterdam. A casino on the street called Damrak:-

City Archive Building. Horizontals and verticals galore, plus banding:-

Detailing. Frieze and note lettering above door to left:-

Frontage:-

Entrance. The building now seems to be or at least house a museum on the History of Amsterdam:-

Former Bridgegate Chambers, built 1934. Seems to be now known as the Bridge Church. From this end I couldn’t get it all in one shot. Note lozenges in the brickwork above the windows:-

Reverse view. Nice rounded corner:-

The windows on this one look like Critall ones:-

The ones below are hard to see for the trees but seem to have some deco about them:-

We passed this on the way in to Retford and I wandered back to photograph it after we parked. It has many Art Deco features but is now a Masonic Lodge:-

Frontage:-

It’s situated near to a bridge over the Chesterfield Canal, which the building lies beside. Side view:-

Reflections on the Chesterfield Canal from steps down from road. Former Regent Cinema reflected on right of photo:-

This Exhibition is at the Scottish National Gallery, Princes Street, Edinburgh but alas only till 25/2/24. The good lady and I only managed to get to it last week.
One of Hokusai’s views of Mount Fuji: “Sudden shower below the summit” from 36 views of mount Fuji:-

Kasawe Hasul’s Shin Ōhashi Bridge from Twenty Views of Tokyo:-

Concert Hall by Sybil Andrews. I liked the very Art Deco feel of this:-

A Picasso print. It looks like a ‘face’ playing card:-

Toulouse Lautrec’s ‘Jane Avril’. I grew up with Toulouse Lautrec’s prints on my grandparents’ and, later, parents’ walls. I inherited a couple which now hang in my bedroom.

There was a Hockney:-

a Vanessa Bell:-

and I rather liked this John Piper offering:-

If you want to see it you’ll have to be quick. The exhibition is due to end on Sunday.

I wasn’t expecting to find Art Deco in Lossiemouth but then again a lot of 1920s/30s cinemas were newly built and in the deco style.
This is the former Regal Cinema, which opened in 1939. I found it in Queen Street. It’s now a Co-op:-

Frontage. Rule of three in columns to front, nice curved detail near roofline, flagpole. Glazing totally knackered, though:-

Closer view:-
