Star War Memorial

Star, or Star of Markinch, is a village in Fife, lying between Markinch and Kennoway, and a few miles from Son of the Rock Acres.
Its War Memorial is a plaque on the wall of the Primary School.
Surrounded by Celtic knot work the inscription is “1914” (as a monogram) “Pro Patria” plus a monogrammed “1918” then, “To the glory of god and in memory of the men of Star who fell in the Great War, followed by their names and, “They overcame and they loved not their lives unto the death.”

hi there!
I am a member of the Star History Group which was formed about 2yrs ago. I have been researching the men listed on the Star Memorial and managed to link most of the men who died to Star Village. I am really having a problem with one particular soldier James Laing can you help ?

Aileen,
I’m sorry I can’t help you. I know no more about the names on the Star Memorial than anyone else.
My main interest is in recording the War Memorials themselves.
The Scottish Military Research Group – Commemorations Project (http://warmemscot.s4.bizhat.com/) sometimes has biographical details of war dead but I’m afraid hasn’t any for James Laing.
Thanks for looking in, and again I’m sorry I can’t be of help.

Hi
I hope you can help me with some details about the last name on the memorial.
Is James Anderson the former innkeeper at Star?
Thank you for any information you can give.

Andy,
I’m sorry but I don’t know any details about any of the men whose names are on the memorial. I’m not a native of Star and only moved to nearby Markinch 10 years ago.
Thanks for looking in though.
