We drove through Ardersier (located on that arm of the Moray Firth which leads to Inverness) on the way to see Fort George – which was shut.

Like the Memorial at Resolis this is a column with carved crossed sword and rifle enclosed by a wreath, all surmounted by an urn:-

The towns of Macduff and Banff lie on either side of the Deveron estuary as the River Deveron flows into the Moray Firth. This is Macduff as seen from Banff. The tower on the hilltop is Macduff’s War Memorial but I didn’t get across to photograph it.

Burghead stands on a promontory sticking out into the Moray Firth. We visited because we had read of the ancient chambered well there.

To visit the well requires picking up the key from the visitor centre. This, it transpired, was hard by the remains of a Pictish Fort though to be the oldest in Scotland. Apparently about half the Fort was destroyed when the town was built in the early 19^th century.

It’s not just Orkney where you can find the remains of brochs.

This one, Càrn Liath Broch, lies west of the A 9 just north of Golspie, Sutherland, Scotland. It’s very well preserved.

Park at the lay-by on the other die of the road – take care crossing, it’s fairly busy – and it’s a short walk to the broch
