Scotland’s Art Deco Heritage 15. Drumossie Hotel Inverness
Posted in Art Deco at 14:25 on 26 July 2010
Someone got to my blog by searching for “skottland art deco hotell” presumably because I’ve recently posted about the Balcomie Links Hotel or more likely the Beresford Hotel in Glasgow.
Anyway I looked at the google search page and found links to the Drumossie Hotel, Inverness.
A quick look through flickr turned up five photos which revealed part of it to be branded Inverness Conference & Banqueting Centre now. It’s undeniably Deco.
One of the flickr contributors complained that the local planning committee had vetoed new windows because they weren’t in keeping. The ones in the pictures don’t look original to me, though.

The top picture is mine.
Re the windows. About 15 or so year ago the hotel wanted to change their original metal windows for uPVC. The Council said no because it was a listed building.
Without planning consent, the hotel nevertheless went ahead and changed all the windows for a fearsome amount of money.
Every year thereafter, the Council wrote to the hotel insisting that the original windows must be reinstated or else. Fifteen years later, the new windows are still in place!
For added interest, the original metal windows have not been broken up but are held in safe keeping.

Thanks for this information, Duncan.
Your picture is delightful. (Thanks also for letting it be available to others via flickr – as all mine are.)
It’s good to know the original windows are still in existence. Maybe the council will eventually get round to insisting they be put back. Though I suppose there will be legal costs involved in that which, if they’re cash-strapped, might be an impediment.
