Scotland’s Art Deco Heritage 10. Kelvin Court, Anniesland, Glasgow

Kelvin Court

Kelvin Court West Building

These flats are the nearest equivalent Glasgow has to the building ITV used for Poirot’s apartment in the TV adaptations (Florin Court, Charterhouse Square.)

They are on the right after you pass Anniesland Railway Bridge on the way from Dumbarton into Glasgow along Great Western Road. I passed there many a time on my way into the city when I was living in the West.

This is a close up of the front entrance of the western building:-

There is a similar entance at the western end of the frontage:-

The last photo is of the Eastern building:-

But how many of the flats inside still have internal Art Deco aspects like those in the ITV Poirot series? (Which were in any case probably mocked up in a studio.)

A picture of Kelvin Court taken in 1955, from the other side of the bridge, is at The Glasgow Story. The Ascot Cinema (no 11 in this series) nowadays lurks just to the left after the bridge but it didn’t when this photo was taken.

There are some Flickr photos of Kelvin Court here and here.

Also a composite one on the Scran website.

I have so many memories of the people who lived in Kelvin Court when it really WAS art deco. I played throughout the grounds and visited many elderly, and lonely, people living alone in the flats. The gardener back in the 1950’s was an old highlander called Archie who kept the grounds beautiful and there were far more roses at the front than there are now. Mrs Sommerville was the manageress. Many Lords and Ladies occupied flats, as well as ambassadors etc.

Hi, I am the lady who left the above comments. I would be grateful if you would remove them please. My brother does not like the bad memories. I will write some new and cheery comments instead.

    Hi Anne,
Happy to remove the comment for you. It should have gone now.

I was conceived in Kelvin Court in 1958 when my parents were in Scotland for the Canadian Foreign Service. They came back to Canada & I was born in Victoria BC …but I’ve always had an affinity for this style of apartment block. During my 20 years as a cruise ship piano entertainer i’ve met several Scots who live or have lived there …all with fond memories.

There are MARVELLOUS AND WONDERFUL aspects of the internet.

    🙂

    Hello Jack,

My sister & I are making a retrospective movie & slideshow for my Dad’s 90th birthday at the end of May this year (2015). I came back to your site to copy some details of Kelvin Court and only now saw your reply to me from 2014!!

If that’s an invite to be and Honorary Scot -I’ll gladly accept the Honour!

    Thanks,
    Regards
    K
