The Trouble With Kurt Cobain and Nirvana (ii) Pentecost Hotel

Apart from calling his band Nirvana I once thought that Cobain’s use of the song title Smells Like Teen Spirit was pretty cool, a nice metaphorical touch. Then I found out Teen Spirit is actually some sort of American deodorant.
Not so cool at all, then. (Except under the arms of course.)

Well, they were supposed to be taking the piss out of the deodorant’s advertising, to some extent. Not that the song is actually anything to do with that…

It’s just that, from a UK perspective the phrase seemed iconic and emblematic so then to discover it was actually prosaic…. took the shine off a bit.
