The Christmas present of a jigsaw I blogged about here has now been completed. It shows Boghead Park, former home of the mighty Sons of the Rock, Dumbarton FC. Completing it was a fine nostalgia trip for me.
Starting out:-

Pitch just about completed:-

Surprisingly the hardest part to complete was the crowd in the foreground:-

My younger son is married to a girl from Rochdale and travelled down there for Christmas. Unfortunately his present to me got mixed in with the Rochdale ones. Hence I did not receive this lovely surprise till the New Year had arrived. A 1000 piece jigsaw depicting Boghead Park, home of the mighty Sons of the Rock for well over a hundred years.

Slightly belated but nevertheless very welcome.
(We currently have a different jigsaw on the go so this one will be on the back burner for a while.)

There is a small display at the People’s Palace on Glasgow Green which shows images of Glasgow’s various International Exhibitions.

The colour picture at the top is of the 1901 Exhibition, a panorama of that same exhibition is below it, a sepia depiction of the 1888 Exhibition lies below the writing, a view of the Scottish Pavilion at the 1938 Empire Exhibition is to the left and a poster stamp of the Empire Exhibition’s logo in red is below that.
The colour picture is of the Main Pavilion at the 1901 Exhibition:-
The mostly blue picture is of the interior of one of the two Scottish Pavilions at the 1938 Empire Exhibition:-

Here’s the poster stamp in a closer up version:-

The People’s Palace also has one of the jigsaws of the Empire Exhibition:-

Note the (oddly shaped) missing piece of the jigsaw. I actually have a complete example of this jigsaw at home (a companion piece to this) but it’s still in a box somewhere due to the house move last year.

The jigsaw – made by Waddington’s – shows one of the Scotland Pavilions (there were two of these sited opposite each other on Scottish Avenue,) the Tower of Empire, United Kingdom Pavilion and the Canadian Pavilion plus a troop of charging horse.
The box this one came in was a bit tatty but still striking with the lion rampant logo and Tower of Empire.

There is another Waddington’s jigsaw of the Exhibition featuring a closer view of the Tower of Empire with aeroplanes in the sky overhead and this time with a marching band of bagpipers approaching the foreground. I have that in a cupboard somewhere.
