Sons First Top Flight Win in Fifty Years

Someone posted a link to this on Pie and Bovril.

I didn’t know this footage existed.

Muirton Park, Perth, October 7th, 1972. St Johnstone 0-2 Dumbarton. Sons first win in the top division since 1922.

I was there!

Muirton Park is long since gone and is now the site of an ASDA store.

Long gone too are Sons’ chances of a place in the top flight. Money – or its chasing by the “big” clubs – put paid to that.

What struck me was how well attended the game was. Rare home-movie footage, that.

    Eric,
Yes. The price of football was relatvely cheap then as I recall, with not much else to attract the fan on a Saturday afternoon.

I was on the terracing behind the goal at the far end. I had a great view of Tom McAdam scoring his first goal in senior football, climbing above the defender to head it in.
