Oil Rig in Firth of Forth
Posted in Kirkcaldy, Shipping at 20:05 on 27 January 2014
The rig has been off Kirkcaldy for about a week now. I can’t find out anything about it on the net beyond its presence.
Does anybody know if there’s an oil rig location website similar to ais.com, which is for ships?

Apparently it’s called the Wilhunter. Gentoo2 commented on my flickr:-
“The rig is the semi-submersible drilling platform called the ‘Wilhunter’
It arrived in the Forth overnight Jan 15th/16th with three tugs (Magne Viking, Balder Viking, Olympic Zeus) and a safety vessel (Grampian Defiance).
It took 24 hours to deploy the anchors and the tugs have now left, though the safety vessel is still standing by.
It is parked at mooring K6 and will remain up to 2 weeks.
I found the information on the Forth Ports Authority website.”

There’s two now! One right off the beach in Burntisland, and one off the coast of Kirkcaldy! WTF!!!

Thanks Jonathan,
I haven’t been along to Burntisland recently so I didn’t know about that one.
I can remember a time when there were three or four rigs in the North Sea off Kikrcaldy waiting to be towed to a drilling site but that was when the oil boom was at its height.

Thanks for commenting, Kevin.
I’ve noticed shipais.com doesn’t seem to list rigs.

Thanks Flosoffa,
I saw some tugs lining up beside it early this afternoon so I thought it might be for the off.

Hi.
I’m new to Burntisland and was just searching about this.
The one off Burntisland beach has disappeared recently.
Does it come and go?.

Hi Ewa,
Thanks for looking in.
Rigs appear and disappear off the Fife coast. I’m afraid I don’t know enough about their movements to answer your question about any particular rig.

Safe Caledonia completed operations for BP on 31 March. The vessel is currently at Burntisland in the UK for preparatory work before mobilising for a contract with Nexen in the UK commencing early June 2014.

Jeff,
I think they just moor there between jobs elsewhere.
Thanks for looking in and commenting.
