Elgin City 1-1 Dumbarton

Hmm. Maybe a longer, harder season than the first half at Airdrie suggested. Worrying echoes of last season when Fergus Tiernan was top scorer after two games.
Seventh after two games and both teams we’ve played still below us is not good news.
Still we were injury ridden, remain unbeaten in the league and it’s three games in a row now we’ve come back from 1-0 down. That wouldn’t have happened under Gerry McCabe – or Paul Martin.

Jack – I see you share the same views as Big Rab when it comes to putting a positive spin on what has been a poor start to Sons’ season. Are we conveniently forgetting McCabe’s first season in charge, where we were tanking Montrose 5-0, or hammering Stenhousemuir 4-0? And beating Elgin four times?
And if we are talking comebacks how about the Lazarus approach by Paul Martin’s team when down 2-1 with four minutes to go, fielding only nine men thanks to some biased referring by Colin Hardie, only to manage a 3-2 victory?
Let’s get some perspective. From the first three league games of this season, most were expecting at least 7 points from 9 available. Sadly, it’s not turned out that way thanks to, in my opinion, some better than expected performances by the opposition.
But there’s no panic. Leagues are not won or lost in August of any season, though I would have opted for better results than we have managed to eke out.

You do have a point. I am disappointed with the results but was looking for the bright side.
Were there any more big wins under Gerry McCabe? I don’t recall them.
As for the Forfar game, I was at that one, we should have had a penalty earlier than we did and never been 2-1 down. The winning comeback was a fluke, the third goal a joke by their keeper.
Latterly under Paul Martin we made a habit of losing games from 2-0 up.

To be fair sonsteam, Elgin that season were probably one of the poorest senior teams ever. Sure the Montrose and Stenny results were exceptions but the point being made was the inability of previous teams to fight their way back into a game. I well remember our defining game in division two when Alloa came to the Rock and took the lead. I’d have bet my mortgage that we wouldn’t have equalised despite having had a fair share of the play that night. I never felt we were out of either the Montrose or Annan games.
You’re right, no panic but improvement needed.

Fair enough lads, but I really don’t think comparisons at this stage are justified.
Rab – Elgin this season are no better than when they joined the league. With only 13 signed players, we really should be taking care of them, especially when the pitches are good for the kind of football Chappie is trying to play.
Bring on Berwick! I think.
