Friday on my Mind 228: Love Child

Part written by R Dean Taylor* (along with Frank Wilson, Pam Sawyer and Deke Richards) this I suppose is a kind of protest song. Certainly one of those socially aware offerings that came to the fore in the latter part of the 1960s.

It’s a belter, though.

Reelin’ in the Years 185: Nathan Jones

I was so sad to hear of the death of Mary Wilson of The Supremes. The group had one of the signature sounds of the 60s more or less introducing Motown to British audiences.

Though she started the group Wilson was not given the post of lead singer, perhaps because Diana Ross began a relationship with Motown boss Berry Gordy. Ross was pushed so much to the fore that the group’s name was altered to feature her. When she left singing duties were shared more fairly.

This is one of those later post-Ross hits, where all three members took the lead.

Friday On My Mind 6: You Keep Me Hanging On

This must be one of the most radical reworkings of a hit song. It’s up there with Joe Cocker’s With A Little Help From My Friends.

(The original can be found here.)

There are echoes of late Syd Barrett era Pink Floyd on the intro which is also reminiscent of the early Status Quo hit Pictures Of Matchstick Men except with an organ instead of a guitar.
