“And” Is An Indefinite Article?

I don’t know if anybody else has noticed this, but today – which prompted this post – I saw in print the phrase “one and other” describing a mutual relationship.

Now I don’t know about you but I always thought the relevant phrase was “one another.” One and other implies to me a lack of mutuality rather than an emphasis of it.

I have also seen “and” replacing “an” in other written pieces where the definite article comes before a word beginning with a vowel.

The only way in which I can see this coming about is if people nowadays routinely pronounce “and” as “an” and so when they hear “an” they think “and.”

But why write it down as such if you have any inkling at all of word meanings?
