An Away Trip

I remember football.

(Just.)

I remember away games.

(Dimly.)

The reason for our visit up north via Dunnottar Castle, Stonehaven and finally Aberdeen last January was for one such away game; Sons’ 4th Round Scottish Cup tie at Pittodrie on 18/1/20.

Before the game we met up with my younger son and his wife, who were making a day of it, in a pub in Aberdeen city centre for some lunch. The pub had also attracted other Sons fans:-

They don’t half make a fuss before a game at Pittodrie.

Apart from the result it was a good day out.

I wonder when I’ll be able to have another away day.

Third Round Draw

I do hope this post is not too previous.

Should Sons beat Huntly in our Second Round Cup Tie (currently due on Tuesday evening at 7.45) our next opponent will be Aberdeen at home.

We’ve made a habit of drawing Aberdeen recently, in the Quarter-Final in 2014 and in last year’s Third Round, both times up at their place, both 1-0 defeats.

This outcome is of course not guaranteed as the last time we played Huntly at home in the Cup (1992) they beat us 2-0.

Scottish Cup Time Again

The draw for the Second Round of this season’s Scottish Cup has paired the Sons with the winners of the Huntly vs Cumbernauld Colts First Round tie, postponed on Saturday.

I don’t think we’ve ever played Cumbernauld Colts but I well remember a home game against Huntly in a season when we won promotion from the old third tier (in the days when there were only three.) Unfortunately that success was not replicated in the Cup. In another home tie for us Huntly beat us 2-0. We were obviously concentrating on the league.

This season’s game is due to be played on Sat 9th Jan. That’ll be in the middle of a run of what are now five games at home in a row (provided the East Fife game – also postponed on Saturday – gets rescheduled during the period.

Morton 3-0 Dumbarton

Scottish Cup, Round Five, Cappielow Park, 10/2/18.

So that’s us out of the cup then. Doesn’t look like it was a good day for us at all. We seem to be really toiling.

Six points behind 8th place in the league now too almost certainly means we’ll be in the relegation play-offs. I can’t see us making up the gap especially with all the postponed games we need to catch up on.

Next up is the Challenge Cup sem-final against The New Saints in Oswestry on Saturday 17th. Catch it live on S4C if you can’t get to the game. Kick-off is 7.35 I think.

It’ll be a change and new experience for the fans. A bit of pressure off for the players too, though arguably today was too. And they’ve got to go again in the league the Tuesday after.

I had some optimism about this game when the draw was made but that’s just about evaporated now what with recent results.

Still, you never know.
