SPFL Tier 4, The Rock, 7/3/26.

An odd thing happened at this game.

We looked like an actual football team.

Unlike last week where we started as if we hadn’t seen each other before, this was cohesive right from the kick-off. We peppered their box with crosses and though balls.

Mind you with every wasted promising situation I was beginning to think that this had them scoring from their first opportunity written all over it. Thankfully that wasn’t to be.

Diminutive midfield loanee Alexander Smith (known as Smudge or Smudger apparently) was putting himself about to good effect with some great footwork. He also carried out defensive duties, tracking back well and harrying opponents.

It was frustrating not to be ahead at half time.

That frustration ended on 51 minutes. A great cross from the overlapping Ali Omar – we seemed to be playing three at the back with him on the left – found Gordon Walker free towards the back post. His bullet header was diverted by the keeper onto the bar but it came down and bounced off his back into the net.

Spartans then began to play with a bit more urgency but didn’t trouble loanee keeper Aidan Rice much except for a good save he made with his feet.

Then Scott Tomlinson got the better of a defender whose feet got in a muddle and his cross was converted under the keeper with a great back heel flick by Leighton McIntosh.

The third came because Spartans were overcommitted.  A swift counterattack saw Scott Tomlinson cross again this time for Scott Honeyman to deliver the coup de grace.

Players and fans were enjoying themselves now even if there was time for Aidan Rice to make a good save from the only threatening shot he faced from outside the box.

We need this kind of performance to carry on to Tuesday night against Stranraer. Especially since Edinburgh City also won yesterday to keep within touching distance of us.

SPFL Tier 4, Galabank, 10/2/26.

Well, I wasn’t at this, but it could vey well be the death knell for our SPFL tenure.

Made worse by the fact their winner was scored by Joel Mumbongo who couldn’t hit a barn door for us last season.

It’s now five points taken from the past thirty three possible. That’s not just relegation form. It’s oblivion.

We’ve only won twice at home in the league all season.

And this Saturday we’re at home again – to Stranraer, historically our Kryptonite.

There’s no hiding place any more. We’ve played the same number of games as Edinburgh City and are only two points in front – which could be evaporated by game end on Saturday (though they are playing leaders The Spartans.) But we can’t rely on others.

The overly hasty appointment by new owner Mario Lapointe of Frank McKeown as manager after Stevie Farrell was given the boot looks increasingly disastrous.

Mario may have a brain for business but it seems he doesn’t know a lot about football.

It’s now very, very difficult to see where even a point is going to come from – never mind a win.

Moreover, finishing bottom will mean we’re gone. We won’t win the Tier 4 play-off. And going down into the Lowland League (West) will be all but impossible to come back from.

SPFL Tir 4, The Rock, 18/10/25.

Another home game, another loss. Three attempts at goal from open play in the whole game – only one of them on target; and that a sclaffed effort easy for the keeper. Plus Spartans were waltzing through our midfield almost at will. Things aren’t good.

Quite why Scott Tomlinson was playing up front alongside Leighton McIntosh I have no idea. He’s more effective cutting in from the wing. And McIntsoh and Ally Roy (who came on late as a sub) had been reasonably effective as a front pairing earlier on the season.

Their first came from a feigned short corner where we put two men out to defend it. It was swung in and they scored from the resulting ping-pong.

We did put a bit of pressure on late in the first half (without of course testing the keeper,) getting a series of corners. Finally McIntosh’s leap forthe ball gave us the equaliser.

Thrown away a few minutes later when they got down our right too easily, Shay Kelly’s parry – away from goal though it was – went straight to the shooter, whose header across goal wasn’t contested and was deflected in well by their scorer.

I  now “have the fear” – as fans say – about the Cup game against Tayport next Saturday.

Edited to add (late 20/10/25.) We weren’t helped by the number of misplaced or short passes we played. Nearly everyone a culprit. Those need to be eliminated. As does the penalty give away. At least the taker this week clattered it against the bar or we’d have been another one lower on the goal difference.

SPFL Tier Three Play-off Final, First Leg, The Rock, 14/5/24.

We started slowly (or Spartans started fast.) Then we began to come into the game. The weather was awful. I’m glad I decided not to make the long trip and opted for BBC Alba coverage instead.

Our first had an element of luck. Gallagher Lennon was definitely trying to cross the ball but the wind took it and made it into a “shot on target.” Their keeper really messed up his attempt to deal with it though. He ought to have pushed it over. As it was he simply pushed it into the area and Tony Wallace steamed in to put it past him.

The second by contrast was superb. Michael Ruth rolled his man and sprinted down the left hand side. His cross in was perfect for Finlay Gray to score. I’m not sure about our disallowed goal for offside. The TV didn’t have a conclusive angle. It did show though their centre half deliberately stamping on Michael Ruth at halfway. The ref was only eight yards away and looking right at it!

To rub salt in the wound that was the guy who scored their equaliser three minutes in to the second half. The randomness of football. He just stuck a leg at it.

From then on it was like water torture (even if the weather had improved.)

So it’s finely balanced for the second leg on Friday night. I don’t know if my nerves will stand it.

SPFL Tier Three 3 Play-off, Semi-Final, second leg, Forthbank Stadium, 11/5/24.

Like water torture. This was indeed a long 90+ minutes.

Albion looked a side lacking in confidence, not surprising when you slide into a relegation play-off spot.

In the first half they only threatened our goal once, after a bit of ping-pong in the box following a corner. Jay Hogarth saved the first effort but when the rebound was played across goal their attacker air-kicked a sitter.

We ought to have scored when a great move culminated with Div Wilson going for the near post but just shaving it into the side net. (Just for a moment it seemed he had scored.)

In the second half Albion came out to throw everything at it even going to three at the back. As a result our midfield was overrun at times but Jay Hogarth never really had a save to make. One shot did hit the post but that was it.

We had a few counter-attacking forays but tended to overcarry the ball when a pass was on (Kalvin Orsi and Finlay Gray I’m looking at you) or else players strayed offside so we never put the tie to bed. (Curiously, the linesmen flagged at the earliest opportunity, something which is very rare these days.) Michael Ruth was again superb up front but never got the clear chance his hold-up and general play deserved.

The final whistle was more of a relief than anything else even though Stirling never looked like scoring.

So it’s on to the Rock on Tuesday evening for the first leg of the Play-off Final against The Spartans then to Ainslie Park (of ill memory but also great memory) on Friday.
