SPFL Tier Three 3 Play-off, Semi-Final, second leg, Forthbank Stadium, 11/5/24.
Like water torture. This was indeed a long 90+ minutes.
Albion looked a side lacking in confidence, not surprising when you slide into a relegation play-off spot.
In the first half they only threatened our goal once, after a bit of ping-pong in the box following a corner. Jay Hogarth saved the first effort but when the rebound was played across goal their attacker air-kicked a sitter.
We ought to have scored when a great move culminated with Div Wilson going for the near post but just shaving it into the side net. (Just for a moment it seemed he had scored.)
In the second half Albion came out to throw everything at it even going to three at the back. As a result our midfield was overrun at times but Jay Hogarth never really had a save to make. One shot did hit the post but that was it.
We had a few counter-attacking forays but tended to overcarry the ball when a pass was on (Kalvin Orsi and Finlay Gray I’m looking at you) or else players strayed offside so we never put the tie to bed. (Curiously, the linesmen flagged at the earliest opportunity, something which is very rare these days.) Michael Ruth was again superb up front but never got the clear chance his hold-up and general play deserved.
The final whistle was more of a relief than anything else even though Stirling never looked like scoring.
So it’s on to the Rock on Tuesday evening for the first leg of the Play-off Final against The Spartans then to Ainslie Park (of ill memory but also great memory) on Friday.

Scottish Cup, Round 2, Townhead Park, 21/10/22.
So to deepest, darkest (and wet) Ayrshire.
At least it was a win. Potential banana skin avoided.
But we made hard work of it.
We were on top for most of the first half with some neat approach play but only a Finlay Gray strike just off target to show for it before a leading arm challenge in the box resulted in a penalty. Carsy duly netted past the keeper. Not much else of note occurred before the break.
In the second half they came out more strongly (as was only to be expected) but we made the mistake of letting them back into it. From where I was up the other end – about three or four yards from their keeper at times – it looked to be a mistimed clearance gave them the ball and the equaliser was inevitable from then on.
I was now getting flashbacks to the play-off game at Ainslie Park last May. Not that Brett Long in our goal had too much to do, but still.
We started to press them in the latter stages, had several efforts just off target, but got a reward when Gregor Buchanan headed in after a corner was returned back across goal. He couldn’t really miss. I felt relief more than anything and reflected to myself that we stil hadn’t scored in open play since that one at Methil.
Then almost at the death we did, thanks to them giving the ball away to Finlay Gray. He rounded the keeper beautifully and slotted in.
In the hat for the next round.
Thankfully.

SPFL Tier 3 Playoff Final, First Leg, Ainslie Park, 17/5/21.
Well. Where did that come from?
I thought we had played quite well first half and had the better opportunities but we had fallen a wee bit out of it even if they hadn’t had a shot on goal. I must confess when they scored, out of the blue really, (Sam Ramsbottom could maybe have done better?) I thought the tie was over.
But we came out and started to get at them.
Unusually a short corner worked for us, Ross Forbes playing a wicked cross on to Ryan McGeever’s head. No doubt where that was going. Our first ever goal at Ainslie Park.
The second was due to Forbes driving at the defence. His shot wasn’t properly dealt with by the keeper and Tomas Brindley, even though he hit the rebound directly at him, still had enough on the ball to get it past him.
The third was Forbes again, putting in the free-kick sweetly for Morgyn Neill’s bullet header.
Three assists for Ross Forbes. His legs may have gone but he’s still capable of delivering a free kick.
It’s still only half time though. Second leg at the Rock on Thursday. If they score first things will doubtless get jittery.

Scottish League Cup (Betfred Cup) Group H, Ainslie Park, 14/7/18.
And so it begins again. It only seems yesterday that we lost the play-off final yet here we are again, playing competitive football.
Well, I say competitive, but this had all the feel of a pre-season game. Given it’s mid-July and the World Cup hasn’t even finished yet that’s not so surprising.
We never looked in danger of losing a goal, though. But nor did we look much like scoring in the first half. Things improved in the second when we looked to raise the pace a bit and especially when Andy Little and Calum Callagher came on for Iain Russell and Ryan Thomson, both looking much livelier than the pair they replaced.
It was an odd sort of game not helped by the sunshine (football in Scotland isn’t meant to be played in such temperatures) and a clash between our new away strip’s red shorts and those of Spartans meaning we came out wearing the new black home shorts with the new away red shirts. We looked like a Brechin City tribute act.
And so to award the bonus point to separate drawn teams we went to a penalty shoot-out. We won. Only the second time I’ve seen us win one.
Another Sons fan gaily remarked afterwards that the last time we won a shootout (the one I saw) we went on to win the league. Early days, son. Steady on.
Still there were signs the new players were beginning to gel. I liked the fact that former (and new again) Son Ross Forbes kept demanding the ball in midfield. We also seemed to change formation a couple of times throughout the game. That’s a potentially good innovation.
And so my first visit to Ainslie Park passed off relatively quietly.

The fixtures for Sons League Cup Section (Group H) have been announced. These are only about six weeks or so away!
First up is a trip to Ainslie Park, a new venture for Sons as we’ve never played Spartans before. Then two home games in the space of four days before a week’s break and a trip to Paisley.
