On the way up to Peterhead we also stopped at Tolquhon Castle near Ellon in Aberdeenshire. The access road is quite narrow but still fine. The castle itself is fairly typical but has an impressive entranceway.

This is in the form of a figure of a soldier carrying a rifle atop a tapering wide column which is square in cross section.
“To the glory of God and in memory of those belonging to the Burgh and Parish of Ellon who fell in the Great War 1914-1919 and of those who gave their lives in the Second World War.”
Second Word War names on lower plaque.
From north. Below the soldier starts the inscription carried on round his feet, “They died that we might live.” Great War names on the cartouche:-
From west. Names for the Great War. The lowest plaque was added in 2000 to commemorate the dead of other conflicts since 1945:-

Ellon (see previous post) has one piece of minor Art Deco, now housing both The Bridge Bar and – of all things – an Indian Restaurant, Nasheen Indian Cuisine.
The stepped roofline is about it for deco touches. The Indian architectural style embellishment above the restaurant’s door must be recent.

We stopped at Ellon both on the way up to Peterhead and on the way back down.
A scenic river passes just to the west of the town, the River Ythan.
It’s crossed by two bridges, the old one:-

If you look closely at the above photo you’ll spot a single swan. Here it is in a closer shot:-
