Thanks, Paul.
I probably won't go back to more Kapp, though.
Eric Frank Russell? Oh dear. Won't Next of Kin stand up to a re-read? I remember finding it very funny at the time but I'll admit he was never one for much characterisation.

I got this as as I was a member of the SFBC at the time. Didn't think much of it then (77 or 78?) and I'd enjoyed the first part of The Chaos Weapon in Vortex, a SF mag of the time (subsequently got the entire novel but, IIRC, it didn't hold up over its entire length).
Think there is better stuff you could probably still go back to: some of his shorter work was quite good including the Unorthodox Engineer series and some of the later NWISF stories.
Maybe he is just one of those writers you can't go back to (Eric Frank Russell. Anyone) after reading 30 odd years of subsequent SF and mainstream fiction. Quite hard to cut from, say, Birdsong or Atonement to that.

Hi Gayle,
Thanks for commenting.
As far as leevin' is concerned you're more likely to be right than me. Eleven made sense to me, but so does living. I'm from the West too, but a bit further up, and my local speech wasn't as broad as Fife's, I would say.

Hi, love this poem, I remember my Mum reciting it at a church concert. I am Ayrshire born and bred and we still use a very similar language to that written in the poem although it's West Coast. The raw is indeed a row. I wasn't so sure about the translation of the word "leevin". I would have translated it as living. Eleven is usually pronounced aleeven. Lovely to see it online. Thank you.

Thanks for commenting, Jane.
I agree. There seems to be a renewed awareness now among younger people of those who died.

Totally unmerited attack by Mr.Moncrieff. I have no idea who he is but having lived in Newburgh for three years, that is pretty much the mindset of the locals and unless you are related to most of the people in their miserable village, hostility will be your way of being treated. What a horrible wee place it is. Good riddance you backward dolts.
